Crippling depression and chronic anxiety problems are the biggest causes of misery in Britain today. They are the great submerged problem, which shame keeps out of sight. If you mention them, you soon discover how many families are affected. According to the Psychiatric Morbidity Survey one in six of us would be diagnosed as having depression or chronic anxiety disorder, which means that one family in three is affected (Layard Report 2006).

Poor mental health is a burden that damages quality of life. Not only for the sufferer, it also affects their families, friends and wider society. Stress, anxiety problems, workplace absenteeism and poor relationship experiences also take their toll. Good mental health is a great advantage in life.
If you don’t have it then many things are harder.
Unnecessarily harder because a very substantial number of those who suffer mental health problems can be effectively treated.
Depression is a treatable disease; anxiety is a treatable disorder as is phobia, panic and health anxiety. Indeed most of the common mental health problems endured today by the modern population of our countries have good and effective treatment solutions, and these are not just pharmacological solutions.
There are good psychological treatments that are well understood, well tolerated and even considered life changing by many who use them. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has reviewed hundreds of properly conducted and rigorously controlled research trials and there is no doubt about it, for most of the problems we are talking about here Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the psychological treatment of choice. In the hands of a properly trained therapist It gives good clinical outcomes. In fact, thousands of people have highly effective anxiety therapy or depression treatment every year and feel their life has changed because of it.

The fact that I find deeply disturbing and one that put me on my journey to create computer based CBT solutions to common mental help problems is this.
There is effective psychological treatment but you are unlikely to be able to get the benefits of it into your life. If you suffer from one of the common mental health problems you probably could be treated effectively with CBT and then move from a clinical condition to a cured condition.
Why is effective CBT not readily available?
Well it is a matter of cost, the availability of trained therapists and the general focus of mental health treatment services.
That does not mean that CBT Therapy is de-facto out of your reach.
There are modern ways of delivering CBT that give you many, if not most of the benefits, no matter where you are in the world and at a fraction of the cost of face to face CBT Therapy.
The 21st century has been defined, so far, by the massive growth in computer development. One important area, in this regard, is the development of computer based CBT. This remarkable innovation has meant that many more people can now receive CBT than previously, irrespective of geographical location or ability to pay for expensive Face to face therapy.
Computer based CBT has started to change the way therapy for common mental health problems is delivered.
This is a movement that has genuinely made effective therapy available to all.
CBT has the largest and most detailed research knowledge base. From this large database or research trials we can state conclusively that depression is now a condition that does not need to be tolerated by any individual. There is effective treatment that is relatively brief, focused and highly effective.
The three N’s of Active Self Help
-
You need to know what the problem is
-
You need to know what to do about it
-
You need to know how to do it
With those three aspects covered you are in a strong position to change your life for the better. Eradicate depression and anxiety and stay feeling well. Recent research where we followed patients up to see how they were doing 2 years after they completed a course of Active Self Help using Blues Begone showed that they remained well and in many cases continued to make improvement in mood. They were free of depression and stayed that way.
