There is a complex relationship between alcohol and depression. We know quite clearly that people who abuse alcohol are more likely to suffer depression but does alcohol cause depression? We know that alcohol abuse leads to many psychosocial problems that themselves lead to depression such as relationship break up, financial problems and work related stressors. However recent research has suggested more strongly that there is a causal link between alcohol use and major depression. It seems that increasing involvement with alcohol increases the risk of depression both directly and through causing other life problems that are depressing.
